Although there are reports of cartel-related violence in certain parts of Mexico, the country is safe for tourists if they avoid those parts and do not try to get involved in criminal activity. Popular tourists destinations such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya, and others, take tourist safety very seriously and have very large number of tourists visiting each year without any serious incidents reported.

The national currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso. Although US dollars are accepted in most tourist destinations. However, using the national currency will get you the best price. Using credit cards will also get you the best price but they are only accepted at larger hotels and chain stores. And some credit cards may not be accepted at some stores but may be accepted at others. So it is important that you always carry cash as back up.
