Guanajuato has colonial architecture that is very well preserved along with over 35 old churches in its capital alone, and is very European in nature. This alone merits a visit. Every October, Guanajuato hosts the annual International Cervantes Culture Festival, which is held in the capital city. The festival features high-caliber performers and artists from around the world, as well as from many regions of Mexico, in addition to the traditional presentation of plays by Miguel de Cervantes.
The city of Guanajuato also has the famous Mummy Museum.
Among cities worth a visit in the state of Guanajuato is San Miguel de Allende, a small colonial town in the Bajio mountains of central Mexico, about 170 miles northwest of Mexico City. Fly to Mexico City. Then take a bus to Queretaro. Spend a few days touring Queretaro, following which book a taxi or bus or rent a car and head onground to Guanajuato, the capital city. Spend a few days visiting museums and colonial streets, then head for San Miguel de Allende.
